As we look back on 2008 and look forward to
2009 this is indeed an exciting time to be a member of the California North Chapter
of the Community Associations Institute.
Under the skillful leadership of immediate Past-President Eric Nelson, the
Chapter flourished in 2008. Under Eric's guidance, 2008 featured a series
of well-attended educational luncheon seminars and a tremendously successful
10th annual golf tournament. The Essentials class for community association Board
Members and Homeowners at Sun City Lincoln Hills was well attended, and the year-end
Awards Gala received rave reviews. The success of 2008 was also due to
the efforts of our Chapter Executive Director, Marti Wallace, who continues to
provide an unparalleled level of support for our Chapter.
This is also a great time to welcome the new CAI-CNC Board of Directors for
2009. We have an incredibly vibrant and talented group of dedicated individuals
again this year. Your 2009 Board is as follows:
President: Darren
Bevan, Baydaline & Jacobsen LLP
President-Elect: Laurie
Harris, CEO, Inc. Community Association Management
Past-President: Eric
Nelson, Sunrise Assessment Services
Treasurer: Sharon
Johnson, Community Association Management Services, Inc.
Secretary: Mary
Peterson, Association Lien Services
Directors at Large:
Susan Oliver, Oliver Management,
Inc.
Diane Pleines, Bank of Commerce l Roseville
Kevin
Hubred, Riverlake Community Association
Otis
Turner, Nepenthe Association
Their contact information is provided under the “About CAI-CNC” button – just
lick on “Chapter Leadership”. I know my fellow Board Members
join me in thanking outgoing Board Members Art Brown, Debi Llata, and Michael
Thomas for their valuable contributions to our Chapter over the years.
Your Board of Directors and other dedicated volunteer committee members
have already begun planning numerous educational programs, fun events, and public
information efforts. As usual, most of the educational and informative
luncheons will be held at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West located at 2200 Harvard
Street in Sacramento starting at 11:30 a.m. We started the New Year with
an engaging, up-beat presentation from Rolf Crocker of Associa who reminded everyone
in attendance about The CID Industry - Why We're Lucky to Be Here!
On Thursday, March 19, 2009, the Chapter will present a panel discussion on
Budgeting for Tough Times. This is a timely discussion of ways to navigate the
pressing financial issues confronting many associations. The weekend of
May 16 - 18, 2009, CAI-CLAC offers its annual Days in the Capitol, an opportunity
for CAI members to educate themselves and talk with legislators about the issues
associations currently face. Tied in with this event is the always-popular
Monte Carlo Night scheduled for the evening of Saturday, May 16, 2009.
To give community association Board members and homeowners additional and
more convenient opportunities to attend educational programs, we’re trying
something new this year. From 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, June 18,
2009, the Chapter will present Board Room Basics, with a focus on two important
topics, “Parliamentary Procedure” and “Understanding Financials” at
Hilton Sacramento Arden West. Also specifically scheduled for Board members
and homeowners is the education and trade Expo on Saturday, July 25, 2009. Watch
for details!
On Thursday, September 17, 2009, our luncheon program topic is Going
Green to Save Green, a fresh look at how using green ideas can save associations
money. Then, under the capable leadership of Golf Tourney Co-Chairs Jennifer
Jacobsen, Baydaline & Jacobsen LLP and Shelia Adams, Sunwest Bank, we will
host our 11th Annual CAI-CNC Golf Classic on October 12, 2009. On Thursday,
November 19, 2009, the lunch program will be our Annual Legislative Review
and New Case Law discussion. To close out the year, the Annual Awards Banquet
will be held on December 3, 2009. Please let us know if you would like
to volunteer to assist us for any of the upcoming events. We can always
use more volunteers!
Key to our Chapter's success are our 2009 sponsors listed at the lower right
on this page. Please join me in thanking them for their generous support
of our Chapter. Without them we would simply be unable to present our wide
array of educational opportunities. If you’re looking for services
they provide, please contact them. If you are interested in becoming a
Chapter sponsor or advertiser for 2009, please contact our Executive Director,
Marti Wallace, at 916.944.0747 or send an email to her at cai-cnced@prodigy.net. She
will be happy to go over our the packages and opportunities with you.
CAI is here to serve the needs of the community association industry – homeowners,
association board members, managers, and business partners alike. If you
have membership needs that are not being met or if you have suggestions for improving
the Chapter's programs or services, please contact me and share those thoughts
and ideas. Together we can make 2009 a fun, prosperous and productive year
for the California North Chapter of the Community Associations Institute.
Sincerely,
Darren Bevan
2009 Chapter President
